Interdisciplinary Science and Technology I
The Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building I provides laboratories and workspace as a research facility for bioengineering, neural engineering, and molecular, tissue, and cell engineering. Building I earned a Gold rating through the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. This building’s green building features include drywells that reduce stormwater runoff on the site by 25 percent; reflective pavements and roofing (which reduce the urban heat island effect); natural and drought-resistant landscaping that has reduced the site’s irrigation needs by 50 percent; and waterless urinals and low-flow fixtures that reduce ISTB-I’s water consumption by 37 percent compared to a conventional building. To encourage public transportation, ISTB-I provides the infrastructure for 36 percent of its occupants to store their bikes on site. Additionally, over 60 percent of the waste generated during the construction of this building was recycled, and large portions of construction materials contain recycled content and/or were regionally manufactured.
